This Dunhuang brand YangQin is made with Painted Maple wood and has a beautiful design along the dulcimer's top side panels. The cherry blossom flowers and songbird design add a visual impact to this YangQin. The flower symbolism associated with the cherry blossom is of feminine beauty and principles of love. Cherry blossoms are an enduring metaphor of the impermiance of life due to their short bloom time. Meanwhile the four songbirds represent a protective spirit and are closely associated with music.

This Chinese YangQin is constructed from Painted Maple masterfully selected by the artisans from Dunhuang. Maple is a very common type of wood used to make musical instruments. This particular type of maple is native to Asia and is a hardwood with a strong, long lasting quality and durability. Often used to make stringed instruments like guitars, violins and autoharps, as a tonewood it carries sound waves well producing snappy, high sounds. Due to a low velocity of sound and a high degree of internal damping, it is brighter than that of mahogany's tonewood sounds. The strings are German steel wrapped nylon.

   About YangQin Top

The Yang Qin (pronounced Young-Ch’in) is a hammered dulcimer. Its 144 strings are stretched over a trapezoidal shape base. Usually this base is placed upon a stand and the player sits in front of the instrument, hitting the strings with two lightweight bamboo beaters (also known as hammers) with rubber tips. The Yang Qin is said to have been developed from a similar Indian instrument, the Santur. It was first introduced into China during the Ming Dynasty (1600 A.D.) and is alternatively spelled as Yang Quin or Yang Ch'in.

Yang Qin is affectionately called "butterfly harp" due to its unique shape. Creating a softer sound than other Chinese instruments, it is tuned so that each pitch runs in courses, with up to 5 strings per course, in order to boost the volume. Tuning can be accomplished via standard tuning screws or further fine tuning with cylindrical metal bolts on the side of the unit.
