Sheng (pronounced Shung) is a free reed wind instrument that consists of vertical pipes, gourd-shaped base and long curved mouthpiece. This instrument is played by alternately blowing and inhaling air through a metal tube connected to the base. It is one of the only mouth-blown traditional chinese musical instruments that allows the player to produce a continuous sound without pause.

Its origins date back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). The pipes of varying lengths are supposed to symbolize the the folded wings of a phoenix bird. It is used both as a melody/accompaniment instrument and for solos.

The sheng produces a strikingly clear, metallic sound. This bright and harmonious tone quality is often used for patriotic or upbeat songs.
